Everkant Series ep. 16 (1st draft)

Pre

Claire eyes her target just like the witch taught her. Poor thing doesn't know what's about to hit it. It isn't the first time she's doing this. Every repeat detaches herself a bit more. 'Empathy, you will learn, is risky.' That was the first thing the witch said to her. And many times after that. Every action and exercise so far in the few years she's been with her have been focusing on killing things. Well, not things. Small animals at first, then some big game useful for the winter. Claire has been dreading this day. She knew it would come. You don't stop at killing animals. This time is a little child playing with a small toy made of carved wood. It seems to be home made. His mother or father without a doubt. Claire brushes off these thoughts. They're irrelevant to her task. Besides, this won't be the first time she kills. A human being that is. Kate is ever on her mind and how the anger at her friend summoned something. Not something. Magic. Your magic. It is time now. The child is alone. Claire approaches him with a smile. She couldn't be any more non-threatening if she tried. 'Come here, I have something I want to show you.' The child drops the wooden toy. It lays dirty on the mud now. 'What is it?' He's too eager.

That was her second kill and her final task as a witch apprentice or whatever the lorefolk like to call it. In her mind there was only one final target, but she would have to wait.
