Everkant ep. 22 - 1st draft

Pre-cataclysm

There's an odd mist in the air. Seph finds it odd since it was mid afternoon on a sunny day. How long has it been since he left the dark city? He can't tell. His mind has been acting weird for the last months. He seems to lose track of time night and day. One day, out on the field, he woke up to a bonfire several days old. He didn't remember if it belonged to him, but there was no one else around. He jumped to the simplest and most logical conclusion. He has been probably drinking a little much, even though his leather canteen is full with water. No matter. His fire is still burning. Stronger than ever. The gods of this world didn't abandon him yet. He has a mission to accomplish and he's close now. One day's journey and he can find the source. The chosen child. From there, taking it away from his parents shouldn't be too hard. In these trying times a silver coin will buy you three months of food. Or one week in the brothel. Prostitutes are expensive, he says while stretching, but not as much as a woman. For that he's glad. A gift from the gods he says. Part of his training as a Guardian. No emotional attachments allowed. Be kind to your fellow men, but never to the detriment of your holy mission. Something like that at least. He can't quite remember the lessons now. Everkant and the Tutors seem so far away. The only thing he has his mission. Bring the child before the gods, save them, save the dark city, save the world. Everything was so...grandiose with them. Even the most menial of tasks were engulfed by some divine purpose, like the gods fucking cared if you cleaned your house or made your bed. 'Something to keep them in order' he says out loud barely containing his laugh "The lamb are nothing without the sheperd." He tried to find his garments but found out they never left his body during the night. Probably why he feels so stiff. As he walks towards a nearby tree he mumbles 'Shit, I really gotta off the booze".
